HATTERAS - Monford Daly Austin, 78, died Tuesday, April 16, in an Elizabeth City hospital. Mr. Austin was born in Hatteras and was a retired commercial fisherman.

Mr. Austin was a member of the Hatteras United Methodist Church and the Hatteras Island VFW. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII.

He was the son of the late Joshua Daly and Elizabeth Willis Austin and the husband of Helen Lacave Austin of Hatteras.

Besides his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Linda A. Smith and her husband Donald L. Smith, II, both of Hatteras; one sister, Marjorie Austin Banks of Norfolk, Va.; two grandchildren, Holly Marshall of Frisco and Laura Fulcher of Hatteras; 2 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Edward Earl Austin.

A memorial service will be held April 19 at the Hatteras United Methodist Church with the Revs. Jim Huskins, Dwight Burrus and Don Brown officiating. Twiford's Island Chapel In Hatteras is in charge of these arrangements.
