VIRGINIA BEACH - Edward E. Austin, Sr., 69, a retired diesel engineer, died Aug. 13, 1993 in Norfolk. Mr. Austin was born in Hatteras, N.C. and was retired from Curtis Bay.

An Army veteran of World War II, he served under General Patton and earned four Bronze Stars. He also served in the Coast Guard and earned the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. He retired from the Coast Guard after 28 years of service. He was an honorary Marine. Mr. Austin was a member of VFW Post #4809 and fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #795.

Survivors include his wife, Effie Virginia Austin; one daughter, Susan D. Cobak of San Diego, California; three sons: Edward E. Austin, Jr. and Robert W. Austin, both of Virginia Beach, and Joshua Dailey Austin of Douglasville, Georgia; one sister, Marjorie Banks of Norfolk; one brother, Monfred D. Austin of Hatteras; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandson.

A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday in the Austin Family Cemetery on Altoona Drive in Hatteras by the Rev. Robert W. Austin. The family will be at Hollomon-Brown Funeral home, Indian River Chapel, from 2-4 today.
