s/o Capt. Samuel Pottenger and Jane (nee Gray) Withrow Gilkey Pottenger. John was the first child born in the "Walnut Hill" home and often called "dissipated". He father wanted him to be more industrious like his other brothers.

He was "the old bachelor" who lived in the "Hope Field"(near the intersection of State Hgwy #52 & New Hope Rd.) It was also called "Pottinger's Girth". He was known to criticize his Catholic neighbors who claimed their dog "old Spot" did not eat meat on Friday". He died from the cholera epidemic of 1833. Never married. Died at age 44. He was the first person born at "Walnut Hill" to die.

On March 16, 1838, settlement of estate of John Pottenger, dec'd, by John G Pottenger, $918.06, returned and recorded May 14, 1838. (Information from Nelson County, Kentucky Will Book 2, page 315)
