James' father had received a grant of 300 acres on Hunting Creek, Tryon County, N.C. but died at the young age of 28 years old. Jane sold the land and soon married a neighbor John Gilkey, and migrated to "Pottengers Station" fort in Kentucky by the way of the Wilderness Trail in the spring of 1781 with her new husband and children James, John and Susan.
James married Sarah Pottenger Robbins, the widowed cousin of Capt. Sam Pottenger, founder of fort. They marrried on December 21, 1790 had 5 children and moved to Ohio around 1801-1802.
