Jane Grey,from Scotch-Irish decent, born in North Carolina about 1748. She married (firstly) Capt. Withrow in North Carolina. Samuel Withrow, b 1740 d 1774. Marriage record found in North Carolina Marriage Records, 1741-2011 lists him as her spouse. Married in Rowan County NC. Also, found in Colonial Families of the United States of America, V. II, pg 600

They had 3 children:

John 1768-1842
Susan 1773-1829

She married (secondly) John Gilkey who migrated to KY by way of the wilderness trail in 1781. He died in Feb 1782 while hunting outside Pottenger Fort, he was scalped and murdered by Indians. Body was buried near or in Fort.

They had 2 children: Robert 1776-1847 Jane 1778-1798

Robert Gilkey was born October 3rd, 1776 in North Carolina. He was married to Sarah S. Kercheval on the 6th of November, 1796 in W.V. He is enumerated in the 1820 Census in Connorsville, Fayette County, In. On June 10, 1823, he purchased 80 acres of land in Montgomery County, and was later enumerated in the 1840 Census in Ripley, Montgomery County, IN. and died in Montgomery County.

Jane Gilkey married John Pottenger on 17 Mar 1795 in Nelson County, Kentucky. She died at the age of 20. John married (secondly) Catharine Railsback.

"Bridges to the Past" states in an article (pp.81-82 BOOK 2) about a woman by the name of Jane Gray: "...Shortly after Samuel Witherow's death [Jane's 1st husband, circa 1772-74], she settled in the new Cane Creek settlements. Shortly after her arrival in Rutherford County [N.C.] , she married a neighbor, John Gilkey. John & Jane had a son, Robert, born on October 3, 1776, and a daughter, Jane, born 1778. In the spring of 1781, John & Jane Gilkey began a move to Pottinger's Fort in North Central Kentucky.....two young men at least made the trip with them--John & David Gilkey. They possibly could be children of John by a previous marriage....Indians killed John Gilkey in February of 1782....

She married (thirdly) Capt. Samuel Pottenger on 12 Jun 1782. They were the first couple to be married in Pottenger Fort. She was twice widowed and brought to the union five children by the two marriages ranging from 3 to 16 years.

Together they had 3 more children:

Elizabeth b 1783
Sam Jr. b 1785
John b 1789

She is buried in the North End of Pottenger Cemetery. Their old brick home was known as "Walnut Hill". (built 1788, torn down around 1940)

Both wives were buried at Pottinger Cemetery with space between them for Capt Sam, however, he was buried where he died.
