Margaret was born in South Carolina and married Lemuel Dacus about 1835 in SC. Their first two children, John and Mary Elizabeth, were born in SC. She was the daughter of John Sitton and Francis Halbert. Her parents traveled to Mississippi in the late 1830's with the Dacus, Austin, Burdine and other families from South Carolina. Her mother Frances Halbert Sitton died on Nov 24, 1839 in Oktibbeha County, MS. When her grandfather John Hill Halbert died in Lowndes County, he left Frances's portion of his estate to her children. Margaret Dacus was listed as a child of Frances. It is unknown when Margaret's father John Sitton died but he was on the 1850 census in Oktibbeha County, MS. Living with him were his two youngest childresn, Susan and William, both mentioned in John Hill Halbert's will.
The following was printed in the 'News from The Choctaw Plaindealer' in 1897 - "Crape Items: Mrs. M. M. DACUS, one of Choctaw's oldest inhabitants, is spending a few weeks with Mr. J. A. AUSTIN and family." J. A. Austin was most likely James Andrew Austin, Anderson and Martha Dacus Austin's son. He was Margaret's nephew. The story goes that Margaret is buried in Milligan Springs Cemetery instead of Dacus Cemetery alongside her husband because she was visiting in the Milligan Springs area when she died and the flooded river prevented the transport of her body back to Huntsville.
