COLUMBIA-Tommy Gene Day, 68, died February 26, 2007. A private service will be held at a later date. Mr. Day was born in East Tallasee, Alabama, a son of the late Roy Edward Holland and Kathleen Johnson Holland. He is survived by a Daughter, Angela Ellis of Florida; brother Bruce Holland of Columbia; sisters, Barbara Freeland of Batesburg, Doris Smith of Summerville; and 2 grandchildren. Predeceased by a son, Andrew Day; sister, Shirley Mills. Milton Shealy funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.

Henry George Holland, A.K.A. Tommy Gene DAY, The fifth and last child of Roy Edward and Kathleen Johnson Holland, was born on Fourth Street in East Tallassee, Alabama. His father named him after Henry George of Literary Fame and whom Roy admired very much. Kathleen wanted to name him Robert Earl after his Uncle who died at an early age. She called him H.G., the children started calling him G.G. which stuck with him until he was almost grown and asked to be called George.Dorothy Johnson was living with the family and took care of H.G. as a baby so his mother could work in the cotton mills and help with the finances. Dot (Dorothy) moved back to the Birmingham area in 1939 and his mother had to quit to care for her children.

When H.G. was almost three years old the family moved to Charleston, SC as his father now worked for Civil Service at the Naval Base. They lived at 21-C Tom McMillen Homes.

At the age of ten, H.G.'s family lived in the country outside of Summerville, SC. It was here that his parents divorced.This hit him hard and he had troubles with the memories it left him with. He and his mother lived together until he joined the Navy in 1956.

While stationed in San Diego, CA. H.G. married Helen Marie Williams on Dec. 5th, 1959. Marie was born Oct. 14th, 1934 in Wolfe County, KY. They had two children, Debra Sue Holland, born Oct. 4, 1960, and Theresa Holland, born Oct 15th, 1962.

H.G was honorably dischargeds from the navy Jan. 28th, 1962, at which time he and Marie Separated and he returned to SC. After working as an Officer of the Law for awhile, he and a friend, Doc Holliday, began playing in country bands and ended up in Nashville, TN. sometimes playing with well known stars of the country world in the "Grand Ole Opry".

H.G. Changed his name to Tommy Gene Day when he met and married Wilma Geraldine Orders(born Aug. 9th, 1946) Apr. 20th, 1966 in Gaffney, SC. They had two Children, Angela Yvonne Day, born May 27th, 1972, and Andrew Dale Day, born Nov. 22, 1974. Andrew was born with Cystic Fibrosis and died at age 20 on Apr. 25th, 1995 in Nashville, TN.
