Shirley Mae Holland was the fourth child of Roy Edward and Kathleen Johnson Holland born in East Tallassee, Alabama. The family lived in Carrvill, Al, and travelled to Roy's brothers house for the birth. The Doctor was an elderly gentleman and put too many drops in Shirley's eyes, causing her to wear glasses after she began school and for the rest of her life. She almost bled to death also as he cut the umbilical cord to close and could not clamp it off properly. Roy was extremely pleased that they finally had a child with "Blue Irish eyes" like his. She was named after Shirley Temple, the child movie star that was so popular at the time. She looked a lot like her as she grew blond bouncy curls, pink chubby cheeks, sparkling blue eyes. She was the darling of the neighborhood.

Shirley was about six when the family moved to South Carolina. She attended Chicora School in North Charleston and Berkely High School in Moncks Corner. She spent her ninth grade in a Miami, Florida school while staying with her sister, Eddie Doris.

Shirley married Walter BRICE of Charleston, SC in 1956. After 2 children they divorced, remarried, and divorced again, dates unsure. She then married a widower, Curnel Edward Mills, with 3 children, in August of 1966 at the home of her sister, Eddie Doris, in Summerville, SC. Starting marriage with 5 children, they soon added a son, John Edward Mills, born 15 September, 1967, in Moncks Corner, SC.

When Johnny was 7 years old, Shirley was killed in a collision with an oncoming car in her lane while she was returning home from work in St. Stephens. The other driver, a teenage girl, was judged at fault. Shirley is buried at St. Stephens, SC.

SHIRLEY MAE – SHIRLEY DID
By Roy Edward Holland

I like brown eyes, I even wed
A girl with brown eyes in her head.
And children came, first one, then two,
Then three and none had eyes of blue.

I’m proud of these kids, I like them fine
Still I wanted one with eyes like mine.
Then another child came smiling thru
And looked at me with eyes of blue!

And she grew tall and graceful and fair
With lovely blue eyes and curly hair,
And a slender waist and curves and stuff
For her nature could not do enough.

And I’m so pleased I hardly know
What to do next or where to go..
I’m constantly admiring the eyes in this kid
For although the first three didn’t, Shirley did.

Good bye to Kathleen, high may she fly
With her wagon hitched to a star in the sky.
May her friends be many and her money plenty,
Her troubles small and hardly any.

Let her business prosper and her prestige grow,
Very important people may she know.
May she pursue her aims and attain her ends,
And be only forty when life begins.

Here’s to me, I hope I’m free.
For years and days I’ve wanted to be.
May I have money and marbles and chalk,
And be able to go without having to walk.

Have Life and Liberty, and maybe peace,
Chickens and bees, and maybe geese,
Fruit and flowers, shade and sun,
And someone to love me before I’m done.
