Kathleen Johnson was the seventh child of Francis Marion and Nancy Angeline Johnson. At age ten, her father passed away after a long illness resulting from an accident at the Tennessee Coal and Iron Company. Her mother found it very hard to feed and cloth the family, although she did make all their clothes.

Kathleen's family were Methodist, however when she was thirteen years of age she joined the Dolomite Baptist Church. It was here she met her husband to be. The minister was Rev. James Shelby Holland and he had a tall curly-haired son named Roy Edward who thought she was "the prettiest girl in Alabama". She had dark brown hair and eyes, slim, and stood 5'5" tall. It was about this time that Kathleens mothers health was failing and found it difficult to care for her children by taking in laundry and sewing in her home. She made arrangements to send her children to the Masonic Home in Montgomery, Alabama where she could also work and be with them. Kathleen was now one month short of her sixteenth birthday and she and Roy did not wish to be separated. After her mother and Roy's parents discussed it, it was decided that Kathleen could marry Roy and she would not have to go to the home with the boys. Kathleen and Roy were married Aug. 28, 1923. Roy was working as a coal miner for Tennessee Coal and Iron Company and rode a bike to work, they were able to move into one of the company houses in Dolomite.
