Obituary - Duane H. Bierbaum - Eyota
EYOTA - The funeral for Duane H. Bierbaum will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Eyota, with the Rev. Levering Reynolds III officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery, with graveside rites by the Eyota American Legion.
Mr. Bierbaum, 83, of Eyota, died Thursday (Dec. 22, 2005) at Saint Mary's Hospital in Rochester.
Born Sept. 16, 1923, in Viola township, Olmsted County, he attended School district 105 in rural Viola and graduated from Eyota High School in 1940. during World War II, he served in the Navy from 1945 to 1946 as a machinist mate aboard the U.S.S. Bon Hon Richard in the Pacific. After his service, he returned to St. Charles and worked for Currie Motor Co. On Aug. 6, 1948, he married Hope Houghtelin in Chatfield, and they moved to Eyota in 1950. They farmed northwest of Eyota until 1987, His wife died in 1997. On Nov. 9, 1997, he married Willa Miller Tesch in Eyota. He was a charter member of Eyota American Legion Post 551, was a past commander and area vice commander; was a member of the color guard; and a member of 40 & 8. He was also past president of the church council and the Farm Bureau; was a 4-H leader; enjoyed playing baseball; and managed fast-pitch softball in Rochester.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Ross (Carol) of Berne, Ind., Randy (Diane) of Eden Prairie, Minn., and Bran (Renee) of Eyota; two daughters, Edith (Bryan) Apelt of Maple Grove, Minn., and Jean (Clint) Wicks of Dodge Center; three stepdaughters; five stepsons; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and three brothers, Harold (Joyce), Earl (Clarice) and Loren (Betty Jo), all of Eyota. Two sisters preceded him in death.
Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Schad & Zabel Funeral Homes, Eyota Chapel, and an hour before the service Tuesday at the church.
