Kay L. Compton Engler Blanchard, formerly of Tustin, Michigan, entered eternal life Wednesday morning, December 9, 2009 at Lake view Lutheran Manor in Cadillac, Michigan. She was 83 years old.

Kay was born in Kearney, Nebraska on June 10, 1926, the second child of Josephuis (Joseph) and Goldie Williams. At the age of nine she was adopted by Fred and Hattie Compton of Tustin. She graduated May 28, 1944, third in a class of 19 from the Burdell Township Agricultural School.

Kay had been employed as a secretary at Cadillac Malleable Iron, Mercy Hospital, Unemployment Office of the State of Michigan, and at Robert Cole Construction Company. She was a member of the Evangelical Covenant Church of LeRoy.

Kay hosted elegant garage sales for many years with clean white sheets as covers and all items cleaned and well-displayed. She loved crossword puzzle books, and puzzles from the newspaper which she always completed in ink. She particularly loved shoes and had many pairs at any given time, sporting a fondness for blue ones.

Her grandchildren remember her for walking trips down the country dirt road by Hewitt Lake picking up "special" stones to collect, and for teaching them to "sew" buttons on old socks, or merely to thread buttons on long string with a large darning needle. She also will be remembered for the sugar cookies she made, topped with one raisin from an old recipe of her Aunt Lura Compton.

In 1946, her fiance, Arden M. Engler, returned from France when peace was declared, and they were married on March 16 at the Tustin Baptist Church by Rev. Gordon Peterson. Three children blessed their marriage, Patricia Engler (Ron) Byers and Bruce (Sarah) Engler, both of Tustin, and Gail Engler (Marty) Young of New Mexico; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

In September of 1977, Aden Engler died of cancer. Kay later married Dale Blanchard, a classmate in Tustin, on June 21, 1980 at the Covenant Presbyterian Church in Tustin by Rev. Tom Beckstrom. They lived in Tustin for 29 years.

Dale survives her along with his children. James Guy (Sara) Blanchard of Wixon and Clay (Cheryl) Blanchard and Penny Stange, all of Cadillac; several stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren; two brothers, Joseph Williams and Richard (Betty) Johnson; a sister, Juanita Kadwell; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services: Saturday, December 12, 2009 at 11 a.m. at the Evangelical Covenant Church of LeRoy, with Rev. Dan Turos officiating. Her final resting place will be Burdell Township Cemetery.

Kay's family asks that you please consider memorial gifts to Habitat for Humanity, St. Jude's Children's Hospital, or to the charity of your choice.
