John William Henry Fosson was the son of John and Christine Laziman Fosson. His mother died when he was a child and his father died much after he did. After working a while in a coal mine in West Virginia, he returned to the West Wood community in Boyd County and worked at the Armco Steel Mill. He began to court Amy Adell Chapman. He had known her before and waited for her outside church one Sunday and asked to walk her home.

During their courtship, he became a Christian himself and was very joyful about that. John and Amy were married in February, 1922. Sadly he got a strep infection in a leg bone and died in May, 1922. His sister-in-law Mary remembered that he complained of a pain in his leg when Amy sat on his lap. In spite of his early demise, Amy had become pregnant and later gave birth to their daughter, Eunice Margarete Fosson. After his death, Amy wrote a poem called "My Consolation." Her consolation was that even though he had died tragically, early in their marriage, he was a Christian.
