John P. Chappell and his family, including Johnnie Martha Chappell, were residing in Chambers County, AL when the Civil War began and he enlisted at Auburn, AL on 26 July 1861. He was a private in Company "D" of the 14th Alabama Infantry Regiment.

Following the tragic death of her husband, John P. Chappell, on 17 Sep 1862 at Sharpsburg, MD in the Battle of Antietam, Mary (Megginson) Chappell, the mother of Mary "Mollie" Chappell Smith, applied for a pension on 30 Nov 1863 which was granted. At the time, 1863 at Milltown, Chambers Co., AL, 33 Y/O Mary (Megginson) Chappell, then a widowed farmer born in N.C. was living with her children: 13 Y/O William Edward Chappell, born in AL; 11 Y/O Mary "Mollie" Chappell, born in AL; 9 Y/O Margaret Chappell, born in AL; 7 Y/O Maxie Thomas Chappell, born in AL and 2 Y/O Johnnie Martha Chappell who was born on 14 Mar 1861 just before her father, John P. Chappell, left for Civil War duty. (The Battle of Antietam was the bloodiest day in American military history.)

The 1870 US Census of New Harmony, Chambers Co., AL enumerated the household of the widowed 40 Y/O Mary (Megginson) Chappell, a farmer. Her husband, John P. Chappell, was MIA at the Civil War Battle of Antietam at Sharpsburg, MD on 17 Sep 1862. Also residing in the household were her children: 20 Y/O William Edward Chappell; 18 Y/O Mary "Mollie" Chappell; 16 Y/O Margaret Chappell; 14 Y/O female Mackey Chappell (This is an enumeration error: it should read 14 Y/O male, Maxie [Maxey] Thomas Chappell) and 10 Y/O Johnnie Martha Chappell.

The 1880 US Census Cherokee Co., AL enumerated the household of the unmarried 23 Y/O Maxie "Maxey" Thomas Chappell, a farmer born in AL. Also living in his household were his 50 Y/O mother, Mary (Megginson) Chappell, born in N. C., and his 19 Y/O sister, Johnnie Martha Chappell, born in AL.

Johnnie Martha Chappell married Paul J. Pollard, a farmer, from Pollard's Bend, Cherokee Co., AL in 1882.

The 1900 US Census of Ball Play, Etowah Co., AL enumerated the household of 44 Y/O Paul J. Pollard, a farmer born in AL, and his 39 Y/O wife, Johnnie Martha (Chappell) Pollard, born in AL. Also living in the household were their children: 17 Y/O Paul D. Pollard, a farm laborer; 15 Y/O Grover C. Pollard, a farm laborer; 11 Y/O Talmage Pollard, a farm laborer; 9 Y/O Bonnie Pollard; 7 Y/O Clifford Pollard; 5 Y//O Clarence Pollard and 1 Y/O Laenna Pollard.

The children of Paul J. and Johnnie Martha (Chappell) Pollard were:
1) Paul D. Pollard b. October 1883 Cherokee Co., AL, d. 22 Nov 1907 Cherokee Co., AL.
2) Grover C. Pollard b. December 1884 Cherokee Co., AL.
3) Talmage Pollard b. 15 Jan 1889 Cherokee Co., AL, d. 15 Jul 1956.
4) Bonnie Pollard b. October 1891 Cherokee Co., AL.
5) Clifford Pollard b. May 1893 Cherokee Co., AL.
6) Clarence Pollard b. March 1895 Cherokee Co., AL.
7) Laenna Pollard b. July 1898 Cherokee Co., AL.

Her first name, Johnnie, is unusual for a female but was carried on to her grand-niece, Jonnie Belle (Chappell) Farrar who at times spelled her name "Johnnie".

Johnnie Martha (Chappell) Pollard was the 2nd cousin 4 times removed through her mother, Mary (Megginson) Chappell, of POTUS Thomas Jefferson. (See Find A Grave Memorial #544).
