Following the tragic death of her husband on 17 Sep 1862 at Sharpsburg, MD in the Battle of Antietam, Mary (Megginson) Chappell, the mother of Mary "Mollie" Chappell Smith, applied for a pension on 30 Nov 1863 which was granted. At the time, 1863 at Milltown, Chambers Co., AL, 33 Y/O Mary (Megginson) Chappell, then a widowed farmer born in N.C. was living with her children: 13 Y/O William Edward Chappell, born in AL; 11 Y/O Mary "Mollie" Chappell, born in AL; 9 Y/O Margaret Chappell, born in AL; 7 Y/O Maxie Thomas Chappell, born in AL and 2 Y/O Johnnie Martha Chappell who was born on 14 Mar 1861 just before her father, John P. Chappell, left for Civil War duty.

The 1870 US Census of New Harmony, Chambers Co., AL enumerated the household of the widowed 40 Y/O Mary (Megginson) Chappell, a farmer. Her husband, John P. Chappell, was MIA at the Civil War Battle of Antietam at Sharpsburg, MD on 17 Sep 1862. Also residing in the household were her children: 20 Y/O William Edward Chappell; 18 Y/O Mary "Mollie" Chappell; 16 Y/O Margaret Chappell; 14 Y/O Female Mackey Chappell (This is an enumeration error: it should read 14 Y/O male, Maxie [Maxey] Thomas Chappell) and 10 Y/O Johnnie Martha Chappell.

In the late 1870s, Mary (Megginson) Chappell and her family migrated from Chambers Co., AL to Cherokee Co., AL near Leesburg, AL.

Mary "Mollie" Chappell, the daughter, married John McDaniel Smith of Ephesus/New Site, Tallapoosa, Co., AL on 14 Feb 1871 at Chambers Co., AL. In the late 1870s, Mary and her husband, John McDaniel Smith, moved with her mother from Chambers County north to Leesburg, Cherokee Co., AL. John M. Smith operated a ferry across the Coosa River near the present-day dam at Weiss near Leesburg, extending the family's many generational occupation with a ferry operation since early Virginia.

The 1880 US Census of Leesburg, Cherokee Co., AL enumerated the household of 29 Y/O John McDaniel Smith and his 28 Y/O wife, Mary "Mollie" (Chappell) Smith. Also in the household were their children: 8 Y/O Mary Smith: 5 Y/O Susan Smith; 2 Y/O James Smith and 3 months old John Smith. John McDaniel Smith's occupation was ferry keeper on the near-by Coosa River.
Living next door was 23 Y/O head of household, Maxie Thomas Chappell, a farmer, and his 19 Y/O sister, Johnnie Martha Chappell. Also residing in the household was 50 Y/O Mary (Megginson) Chappell, the mother of Mary "Mollie" (Chappell) Smith, Maxie Thomas Chappell and Johnnie Martha Chappell.

The 1900 US Census of Dixon, Cherokee Co., AL enumerated the household of 49 Y/O John McDaniel Smith, a farmer born in AL, and his 48 Y/O wife, Mary "Mollie" (Chappell) Smith, born in AL. Also living in the household were their children: 20 Y/O John W. Smith, a farm laborer born February 1880; 16 Y/O Etta Smith, born January 1884; 14 Y/O Willie A. Smith, born June 1885; 9 Y/O Marvin Smith, born October 1890, and 5 Y/O Henry Grady Smith, born October 1894.

The 1910 US Census of Dixon, Cherokee Co., AL enumerated the household of 59 Y/O John McDaniel Smith, a farmer born in AL, and his 58 Y/O wife, Mary (Chappell) Smith, born in AL. Also living in the household were their children: 19 Y/O Willie A. Smith, a farm laborer born June 1885 and 16 Y/O Henry Grady Smith, a farm laborer born October 1894.

The 1920 US Census of Shop, Cherokee Co., AL enumerated the household of 69 Y/O John McDaniel Smith, a farmer born in AL, and his 68 Y/O wife, Mary (Chappell) Smith, born in AL. Also living in the household was their 26 Y/O son, Henry Grady Smith, a farm laborer; his 20 Y/O wife, Lelia Smith, born in GA and their 1 year 4 months old son, John Smith, born in AL.

Mary (Chappell) Smith was the 2nd cousin 4 times removed through her mother, Mary (Megginson) Chappell, of POTUS Thomas Jefferson. (See Find A Grave Memorial #544)
