The 1860 US Census of the Milltown Post Office, Northern Division of Chambers Co., AL enumerated the household of 30 Y/O John P. Chappell, a farmer, born in GA, and his 30 Y/O wife, Mary (Megginson) Chappell, born in N.C. Also living in the household were their children: 10 Y/O William Edward Chappell; 8 Y/O Mary "Mollie" Chappell; 6 Y/O Margaret Chappell and 4 Y/O Maxie (Maxey) Thomas Chappell (mis-enumerated as a female). All children born in Alabama.

The 1870 US Census of New Harmony, Chambers Co., AL enumerated the household of the widowed 40 Y/O Mary (Megginson) Chappell, a farmer. Her husband, John P. Chappell, was MIA at the Civil War Battle of Antietam at Sharpsburg, MD on 17 Sep 1862. Also residing in the household were her children: 20 Y/O William Edward Chappell; 18 Y/O Mary "Mollie" Chappell; 16 Y/O Margaret Chappell; 14 Y/O Female Mackey Chappell (This is an enumeration error: it should read 14 Y/O male, Maxie [Maxey] Thomas Chappell) and 10 Y/O Johnnie Martha Chappell.

In the late 1870s, unmarried Maxie (Maxey) Thomas Chappell migrated with his family from Chambers Co., AL to Cherokee Co., AL near Leesburg, a distance of about 100 miles.

Maxie Thomas Chappell's US Census records are replete with enumeration errors involving his sex and name. Without this knowledge, it would be difficult to follow his census records. In the 1860 US Census of Chambers Co., AL, he was enumerated as a 4 year old female, Maxy Chappell. In the 1870 US Census of Chambers Co., AL, he was enumerated as a 14 year old female named Mackey. In the 1880 US Census, he is correctly recorded as 23 Y/O Maxey Chappell, head of household, living with his mother, Mary (Megginson) Chappell, in Cherokee Co., AL. In the 1910 US Census of Turkeytown, Etowah Co., AL he was enumerated as 43 year old Mark T. Chappell. And finally in 1920, his last US Census, he was enumerated in Gadsden, Etowah Co., AL as 62 year old Mae O. Chapell [sic].

The 1880 US Census Cherokee Co., AL enumerated the household of the unmarried 23 Y/O Maxey Thomas Chappell, a farmer born in AL. Also living in his household were his 50 Y/O widowed mother, Mary (Megginson) Chappell, born in N. C., and his 19 Y/O sister, Johnnie Martha Chappell, born in AL.

NOTE: Located 4 households away in the 1880 US Census of Cherokee Co., AL. was the family of 53 Y/O John Livingston, a farmer born in GA, and his 40 Y/O wife, Elizabeth Virginia (Hannah) Livingston, born in GA. Also living in the household were their children: 16 Y/O Susan Viola Livingston, born in GA; 13 Y/O Willie Livingston born in GA; 6 Y/O Alma Livingston, born in AL, and their 5 Y/O daughter, Ida Livingston, born in AL. There was unnamed child born in 1870 in Alabana who didn't survive thus the birth dates and birth places of the children indicate the family moved to AL from GA between 1867 and 1870. This 1880 census was the last record of John Livingston as he died in 1898. Susan Viola Livingston would marry her neighbor, Maxey Thomas Chappell, about 1882. Since the Cherokee Co., AL courthouse fire of 1885 destroyed the marriage record of Maxey T. Chappell and Susie Viola Livingston, the date of their marriage can only be estimated as about January 1882 when Susie was 18 years old. Their first child, Mary "Mollie" Virginia Chappell, was born on 29 Oct 1882.

The 1900 US Census of Etowah Co., AL enumerated the household of 40 Y/O Maxey Thomas Chappell, a farmer, and his 34 Y/O wife, Susie Viola (Livingston) Chappell. Also living in the household were their four children: 17 Y/O Mary Virginia Chappell, 15 Y/O John Mathis Chappell, 12 Y/O Esther Elizabeth Chappell and 11 Y/O Gussie Alma Chappell.

The 1910 US Census of Turkeytown, Etowah Co., AL enumerated the household of 53 Y/O Maxie Thomas Chappell, a farmer, and his 45 Y/O wife, Susie Viola (Livingston) Chappell. Also living in the household were their daughters: 23 Y/O Esther Elizabeth Chappell and 20 Y/O Gussie Alma Chappell.

The 1920 US Census of Gadsden, Etowah Co., AL enumerated the household of 62 Y/O Maxie T. Chappell, a grocery store merchant, and his 52 Y/O wife, Susie Viola Chappell.

Maxey T. Chappell's initial occupation was farming and records show he purchased 39 acres from the federal government on 21 Dec 1891 to add to his land holdings. By 1920, Maxie had moved from his farm to the close-by City of Gadsden and had purchased a grocery store and become a merchant.

The 1930 US Census of Gadsden, Etowah Co., AL enumerated the widowed 66 Y/O Susie (Livingston) Chappell living alone.

The 1931 Gadsden, Etowah Co., AL City Directory recorded Susie V. Chappell, widow of Maxie Thomas Chappell, living at 956 Gardner St.

Maxie Thomas Chappell was the 2nd cousin 4 times removed through his mother, Mary (Megginson) Chappell, of POTUS Thomas Jefferson. (See Find A Grave Memorial #544).
