Hattie W. Hicks was born in Danville, Montgomery County, Missouri on Feb 25, 1868 to Thomas and Nancy Hicks and grew up there. Her parents were both born in Virginia.

Hattie's first husband was John Garner Malcolm. They married May 18, 1887 in Dent County, MO and had a daughter, Corra, and two sons -- John Cleveland and William Garner Malcolm. Hattie's spouse and their daughter died in 1890, and she remarried to William Albert Partlow in Laclede County, Missouri on March 4, 1891. They had two daughters, Iva and Erva Partlow, in 1892 and 1894, but William died in 1896, leaving Hattie with her two sons and their two daughters still at home as well as William's 13 year old daughter, Etta. Etta was placed in a home as a servant for her room and board and was still working there at age 19 in Dent County in 1900, but Hattie had moved back to Laclede County and remarried there in 1899 to Henry Walter Blanchard.

Before Hattie remarried in 1899, she also found homes for her two Malcolm sons and her two Partlow daughters. John Malcolm, age 11, was boarded with the Pines family in Dent County, and his brother was sent to live with the Tribble family in Laclede County. She placed the girls, aged 7 and 5, in an orphanage run by the IOOF in Liberty, Clay County, MO, where they remained until the oldest passed her 17th birthday and was required to leave.

Hattie and her third husband, Henry W. Blanchard, married on 26 December 1899 in Laclede County, MO, and had five more children in quick succession. By April 1910 the family were living in Joplin, Missouri, and Hattie's two boys by her first marriage and two girls by her second marriage were listed in their household for a portion of 1910. The Partlow girls both married soon after and the two Malcolm boys moved west. By 1920 Hattie and Henry had moved to Pike (Carter County), MO with their two youngest children.

After Henry Blanchard died in 1920, Hattie went to Kansas City, Missouri to live with her daughter, Iva (Partlow) Bolin. She died there of stomach cancer in 1929 and was buried in Forest Hill Cemetery.
