Graveside services for Argus Wilbur A.W. Dennis were held Friday, July 23, 2010 at Thomas Cemetery in Norwood, Mo. with Gary Schowengerdt officiating. Services were under the direction of the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel in Butler, Mo. Online condolences, www.schowengerdtchapel.com.

Argus Wilbur A.W. Dennis, 87, of Adrian, Mo. died Tuesday, July 20, 2010 in Adrian. He was born October 4, 1922 to Arthur Wilbur and Ruth Lowry Dennis in Huron, South Dakota. Argus, one of nine children, grew up in Vanzant and Buckhart, Mo., where he attended grade school.

He served his country during World War II in the United States Army from December 8, 1942 through April 12, 1945.

On July 10, 1942 he was united in marriage to Armandy Taylor in Hartville, Mo. and to this union two sons were born.

Argus owned and operated Dennis Tree Service in the Kansas City area where he maintained lawns and trimmed trees. He later worked for Marley Cooling Tower as a maintenance supervisor, retiring in 1986 after years of service. Upon retiring Argus moved to a farm in rural Butler and most recently has resided in Adrian since 1992. He was a member of Butler DAV and VFW.

On February 22, 2009 he was baptized at the Cedar Grove Baptist Church in Warsaw, Mo. Argus enjoyed listening to country music, farming, working with cattle and horses and looked forward to the spring season. He loved corn bread and milk and his favorite dessert was pineapple upside down cake.

Argus is survived by a son, Berry Leighton Dennis and wife Sue of Adrian, Mo.; a grandson, David Dennis and wife Katie of Topeka, Ks.; two brothers, Earl Dennis of Anderson, Calif.; and Chalmer Dennis and wife Sally of Sulphur Springs, Texas; and four sisters, Iva Byrd of Sacramento, Calif., Versal Hammers of Eureka, Calif., Evelyn Mitchell and husband Red of Reedly, Calif. and Bernice Steel of Redding, Calif. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Armandy Dennis in 2004; one son, Wilbur Dennis in 1964; a brother, Alvin Dennis in 2004; and one sister, Velma Pennington in 2009.
