Ruth Irene Hower Sigmund, 90, of Holton, died Friday morning, August 12, 2011, at Medicalodges Jackson County in Holton for six years.

Ruth was born May 15, 1921 at Lucas, Kansas, the daughter of Archie and Lydia Stevenson Hower. She graduated from Lucas High School and earned her teaching degree from Fort Hays Teachers College.

Mrs. Sigmund lived 47 years near Wetmore before moving to Holton in 1990. She was a homemaker and taught in Jackson and Nemaha County schools. She was a community 4-H leader in Wetmore and a member and active in the Wetmore United Methodist Church. After moving to Holton, she was a member of Evangel United Methodist Church.

On May 25, 1944 she married Wilbur Ray Sigmund. He died October 12, 1998. She was also preceded in death by a son, Galen R. Sigmund; six brothers, Raymond, Milton, Paul, Ted, Warren and Lawrence Hower; a sister, Mayetta Eubank Cahill and a grandson, David R. Sigmund.

Survivors include a daughter, Laurita Morris and husband Steve, Holton, a daughter-in-law, Rose Sigmund, Holton, four grandchildren, Randee Balocca (Mark), Scott Sigmund (Michelle), Brett Morris (Katie), Kristel Bontrager (Chase); five great-grandchildren, Thomas Noble, Baylie, Tanner and Logan Sigmund, Brett Balocca and two great-grandbabies on the way.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 15, 2011 at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Holton. Burial will follow in the Netawaka Cemetery. Mrs. Sigmund will lie in state after 10 a.m. Sunday at the funeral home, where family will greet relatives and friends from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. on Sunday.
