Leona Carmell
Leona Carmell passed away on Saturday, Jan. 27, 2007, at her home in Lee, New Hampshire, after a long illness.
Born Leona Catherine Swanson on Dec. 17, 1922, in Fort Benton, the daughter of Leo and Aileen (Connally) Swanson, she graduated from high school in her hometown and from the University of Montana in Missoula, where she obtained a degree in business administration and served as the president of the Alph Pi sorority.
While working at Northwest Airlines in Great Falls, Mont., she met her future husband on New Year's Eve at the Officer's Club at the Base in Great Falls, Edwin Carmell, of Ludlow, Mass., who was stationed in Great Falls as a pilot during the later stages of World War II. They were married in Fort Benton on July 19, 1945, and Mrs. Carmell worked to put her husband through college at Montana State University, Bozeman.
In 1948, Leona became a military wife when Edwin rejoined the armed force. She raised four children while moving happily from one air force base to the next, including a four year posting in Germany, which she thoroughly enjoyed.
For many years she served as a Red Cross volunteer.
In 1975 Colonel and Mrs. Carmell retired in Lee, New Hampshire, where they have lived ever since. During this time, Leona came to treasure her home life, cooking, gardening and some travel. Colonel Carmell passed away in Nov. 2004.
Mrs. Carmell is survived by her four children, Tim of Castle Hayne, N. C., Sue of West Linn, Ore., Steve of El Dorado Hills, Calif., and Dan of San Leandro, Calif.
Funeral services will be held at the Immaculate Conception Catholic church in Fort Benton, Mont., at a later date.
