BLUE GRASS, Iowa - Raymond Edward Stecher, 97, of Blue Grass, died on Thursday, July 21, 2011, at his home.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, July 23, 2011, at St. Mary Church, 417 Green Street. The Reverend Joseph Sia will officiate the service. An Honorary Bearer will be Bernard Stecher. Casket bearers will be his children. Burial will take place in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Memorials may be left to the Ss. Mary and Mathias Parish or Genesis Hospice. The Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Raymond was born on December 12, 1913, at the family home in Muscatine County, the son of Albert E. and Mary McGee Stecher. He married Helen Richter on June 19, 1940, at the St. Mary Church in Muscatine. She preceded him in death in 1985.

He farmed in the Durant area all of his life.

He was a member of the St. Mary Church, Moose Lodge, and the Polka Club of Iowa. He enjoyed farming and dancing.

Those left to honor his memory include one son, Albert Stecher and wife, Gerri, of Muscatine; five daughters, Donna Daufeldt and husband, Raymond, of Blue Grass, Bettie Brucher and husband, Bill, of Aurora, Illinois, Doris Welsch of Columbia, South Carolina, Mary Newcomb and husband, Tom, of Muscatine, and Bonnie Staggs and Jeff Thoma, of Durant; 17 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two great great-grandchildren; one brother, Bernard Stecher and wife, Leona, of Blue Grass; and a special friend, Dorothy Boles of Davenport.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one brother; three sisters; two grandsons; a great-granddaughter; and two sons-in-law.
