Native of New York.

Married Nancy Edick of Chittenango Falls, Madison Co., New York, on July 4th, 1853 in Syracuse, Onondaga Co., New York.

Their son Charles was born in New York and their daughter Ida was born 8 years later in Illinois.

As of the 1870 U.S. Census, the Fosting family was living in the area of Snelling, Merced Co., California. Lewis was a farmer. Lewis's mother, Nancy, was living with them. They were most likely living on a farm near Snelling. Their post office was in Snelling.

By the 1880 Census, the family was now living in Arroyo Grande, San Luis Obispo Co., Ca. Lewis's mother is no longer living with them and is now deceased.

According to the San Luis Obispo County voter registration record, Lewis was 5'8" tall with light hair, blue eyes and a light complexion. He was not able to read or write but he was able to physically mark the ballot.

Lewis's parents were both born in Holland, The Netherlands according to the 1880 United States Census. Lewis's mother's name was also Nancy.

The remembrance card to the right says "In Loving Remembrance of L. Fosting Died October 30, 1898 aged 67 years A precious one from us is gone, A voice we loved is stilled; A place is vacant in our home, Which never can be filled. God in His wisdom has recalled, The boon his love had given; And though the body moulders here, The soul is safe in Heaven."

My grandmother, Lewis's granddaughter, always said the last name was spelled "Fosting", not "Forsting". The marriage certificate says "Fosting" as well.
