He was raised on a farm and taught the workings of a farm throughout his growing-up years. Whatever formal education he received was given in make-shift schools in the area between Paris and Montpelier.
One of the most common forms of entertainment was dancing. While attending a dance, Calvin met Venna Nelson. They were married Jan. 4, 1938, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.
The couple made their home in Liberty, Idaho on a farm, the only means of subsistence Calvin had been taught. They raised their small family on their farm.
The 1st child born to the couple was Eldeen. She was born Oct. 25, 1938 in Sharon-Liberty, Bear Lake, Idaho. The 2nd child, Kay Hyrum was born May 19, 1940 in Sharon, Idaho. Lynn Nelson was born Aug. 18, 1948 in Soda Springs, Caribou, Idaho. To their great sorrow, he died the same day. Three other children were born to them: Joan, Loretta Diane, and Alan Calvin.
In 1958 Calvin and Venna went to Mink Creek just over Emigration Canyon to a family get-together with Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Nelson, a brother of Venna. They were known to vacation in Mink Creek for 10 days in 1967.
Calvin was selected for Jury Duty June 22, 1954. He was involved in community and family functions throughout his life. When the daughter of Gilbert and Eleanor Nelson married, Calvin and wife were there. They visited the Nelsons fairly often. When David Hyrum Nelson was killed at a power plant, Calvin gave the family prayer in the funeral held in Grace, Idaho in 1971.
In 1974 when the Nelsons held their anniversary party, Calvin was unable to attend. He passed away June 26, 1981 and was buried in Liberty, Idaho.
He was a caring husband and father and a good farmer.
