Samuel was the eldest son of Ephraim Monasmith and Matilda Nixon.

He married Amanda E. Smith on 10 March 1859, and they had one child, William M. Monasmith.

Samuel enlisted as a Private in Company H, Iowa 34th Infantry Regiment on 15 October 1862, The regiment suffered many deaths from disease before it even left Camp Lauman. Six hundred men contracted measles, and later, pneumonia became prevalent, as a sequel to the measles epidemic. The weather had turned cold, and the soldiers, who had not become inured to the hardships and exposures incident to life in camp, were experiencing what was inevitably connected with the life of a soldier - contention with sickness - which took more lives than the enemies' bullets. The regiment was conveyed to Helena, Arkansas, on Novemeber 22, 1862, arriving on December 5th, where it was assigned to be commanded by General Steele. Shortly after it's arrival, the regiment was hit by an epidemic of smallpox, which took a great toll.

The men and officers, who were able for duty, joined the expedition of General Sherman against Vicksburg by way of Chickasaw Bayou. General Steele commanded troops which composed the Fourth Division of the Sixteenth Army corps and the Thirty-fourth Iowa formed the Third Brigade, which was commanded by Brigadier General John M. Thayer during the days of the battle, December 27, 28 and 29, 1862 at Chickasaw Bayou. Samuel was mustered out on 7 April 1863 at Chicago, Illinois due to sickness.

He married again on 19 January 1864 to Laura Jane Close in Warren County, Iowa. They had one child, Sophia Maria Monasmith.

Samuel enlisted in Company C, Iowa 48th Infantry Battalion as a Sergeant on 13 July 1864. The 48th Iowa Infantry was organized as Companies A, B, and C at Davenport, Iowa, and mustered in for one-hundred days federal service as part of a plan to raise short term regiments for service as rear area garrison duty to release veteran troops for Sherman's Atlanta Campaign. As there were not enough recruits to complete an entire regiment in the time allotted, the unit was redesignated a battalion. The battalion spent its entire service guarding prisoners of war at the Rock Island Barracks, Illinois. The battalion was mustered out on October 21, 1864.

On 4 August 1870, he married Mary Elizabeth Norris in Prairie City, Iowa, and they had three children:
Louetta, Ursula and Wilda Monasmith.

Samuel died in the Iowa Soldiers' Home in Marshalltown.
