Joel Lee and his fraternal twin brother John Lee were the youngest sons of Ephraim Monasmith and Matilda Nixon.

In 1850 Ephraim left Crawfordsville and moved his family to Polk County, Iowa. The twins grew up on the farm there. In 1871, Ephraim moved again to Humboldt, Nebraska. Joel went with the family, but John had married and decided to stay in Iowa.

In Humboldt, Joel met Sarah Elizabeth Dugger, and they were married on March 22, 1872.

Ephraim and two of his sons, Joel and Ephraim P. moved to Formoso, Kansas about 1874 to homestead some land. On August 4, 1880, Joel filed a Patent for the Northeast 1/4 of Section 31, Township 3 South, Range 6 West, containing 160 acres.

Joel moved again in 1889 to the "Bridgeport" community in Kechi Township of Sedgwick County, Kansas. He and Sarah stayed on the farm until about 1927, when they moved into town and lived at 828 University Avenue in Wichita. They celebrated their 64th Wedding Anniversary there in 1936.

Joel was the father of seven children.
