Lydia Atwood Shaw was the only daughter and youngest of six children born to Captain William Atwood and Lydia Tilson. Granddaughter of Lieutenant Nathaniel Atwood 1693-1767 and Mary Adams 1704-1744, Lieutenant Jonathan Tilson 1715-1795 and Lucia Cobb 1730-1820.

Lydia married John Shaw, the son of Major John F Shaw and Abigail Perkins. They were married 22 May 1806 in Carver and had three children, all born in Carver:
* Sullivan Bridgham Shaw 1806–1875
* Lydia Atwood Shaw 1810-1830
* Truman Hardy Shaw 1818–1874

Lydia died, presumably in childbirth, in 1818 and John remarried Mercy Bennett. They were married 09 Jan 1819 in Carver and had three children:
*Jacob Bennett Shaw (twin) 1820–1893
* John Shaw Jr (twin) 1822-1891
* George Shaw 1822–1887
