CAPT. WILLIAM ATWOOD
George L Clark, Esq., of Washington D.C. having sent us a valuable record in the form of the complete muster roll of the militia company of Captain Atwood of Chazy, in the battle of Pittsburg, we take occasion to give what is said to be an excellent portrait of the old gentleman, who company made such an excellent record, and is so frequently and honorably mentioned in all accounts of the Battle of Pittsburg.
The Atwoods, descendants of John Atwood, who came over on the "Mayflower" were the first settlers of the section known as West Chazy, where the subject of this sketch settled in 1801, and where he died in 1857. His son, the late William Atwood, is well remembered as one of Chazy's most successful farmers, and public spirited citizens.

John Atwood 1614-1675 is not listed on the Mayflower passenger lists.
