John Shaw was the third of four sons and the fourth of six children born to Major John F Shaw 1754-1835 and Abigail Perkins 1757-1833, the grandson of Lieutenant John Shaw Jr 1727-1802 and Elizabeth Lucas 1734-1806.
John married Lydia Atwood, the daughter of Captain William Atwood 1740-1814 and Lydia Tilson 179-1830. They married 22 May 1806 in Carver and had three children all born in Carver:
* Sullivan Bridgham Shaw 1806–1875
* Lydia Atwood Shaw 1810-1830
* Truman Hardy Shaw 1818–1874
After Lydia died in 1818, presumably in childbirth, John married again to Mercy Bennett. They were married 09 Jan 1819 in Carver and had three children:
*Jacob Bennett Shaw (twin) 1820–1893
* John Shaw Jr (twin) 1822-1891
* George Shaw 1822–1887
