She was born April 25, 1897, at Odon, Indiana., to Franklin Pierce and Catherine Ann (Woodruff) Swayze. Her father died (1904) when she was a child, and she moved with her mother and stepfather to Springfield, Mo., in 1915. She worked at a creamery and also in a jewelry store.
On Dec. 31, 1919, she married Harry Mays at Springfield, MO, following his service during World War I with the Marine Corps. They moved to Little Lost River Valley, where they farmed. She raised a garden, cared for bum lambs, raised calves and chickens, and maintained a household without one modern convenience.
She also served on the school board, was active in PTA, the Cancer Crusade and helped with the Red Cross. Her husband died in 1968. She married Earl McAffee Feb. 18, 1971, at Salmon and they lived at Barton Flat before moving to the Howe ranch. They lived in Arco briefly. After her husband died in 1992, she lived at Lincoln Court in Idaho Falls until entering Idaho Falls Care Center.
She was a member of Friendship Chapter 37, Order of the Eastern Star, for more than 60 years. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing the harmonica, crocheting, knitting, hunting and fishing.
Survivors include her children, Maxine, Adaruth, and Jack; stepsons, Terrance, Michael, Bruce, and Scott McAffee; 22 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, two brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Little Lost River Valley Bible Church in Howe with the Rev. Brian Livermore officiating. Visitation will be Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Marvel Memorial Chapel in Arco and Saturday for one hour before services at the church. Burial will be in Howe Cemetery.
