"Lillian Swift, daughter of Joseph A. and Maria T. Swift, was born June 6, 1891, at St. Louis, Missouri, and departed this life on July 28, 1959, at the Decatur county hospital, Leon, at the age of 68 years, 1 month and 22 days. Lillian was of a family of 10 children. Her father, mother, sisters, and brother, with one exception, preceded her in death. One sister of the family survives, she being Mrs. Etta Wehrli of St. Louis.

On May 19, 1906, she was baptized into the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints, by Elder Samuel A. Burgess, she being the first person he baptized. She was confirmed by Elder Fred A. Smith. This occurred in St. Louis. The family moved from St. Louis to Pleasanton, Iowa, where she worked for her uncle in a store and restaurant.

She was married to Pierce Miller on July 28, 1917, whose death occurred four years later in 1921. On November 7, 1923, she was united in marriage to Sherman McAninch, and they took up residence on a farm in the Bloomington Center neighborhood northwest of Lamoni. Three sons were born to them: Joseph E. McAninch of Omaha, Nebraska; Charles S. McAninch of Kansas City, Missouri; and Lester L. McAninch of Long Beach, California. The family lived on the farm until Mr. McAninch's health failed, and they moved to Lamoni in 1935. He passed away April 24, 1944.

Besides the three sons and the sister who survive her, there are left to mourn her passing eight grandchildren; two step-daughters, Mrs. Roy Swigart, Corvallis, Oregon, and Mrs. Myrtle Coon, Independence, Missouri; also three step-grandchildren, a number of nieces, nephews and many friends.

For the past several years Lillian has worked in the restaurants of our town, where she gave of the best of herself, and endeared herself to her fellow workers. She also spent much of her time working for and helping the sick and those in need, many times when hardly physically strong enough to do so.

Funeral services were conducted at the Marsh Funeral chapel Thursday at 2 p.m. with Elder Morton Edmunds and Joe Hoffman in charge. Interment was in Rose Hill cemetery."
