"According to military records and census reports William C. Baty was born January 1, 1837 in Ohio. His parents were John Longley Baty and Mary Ann Moore. We do not have many records of his early life. He was married to Sarah James September 11, 1861 and to them were born Robert Moore, Charles Benton and Sarah Eva. Sarah is buried in King Cemetery Effingham County .
Records show his occupations as farmer, real estate agent and as sheriff of Effingham County, commissioned November 18, 1872, During the Civil War he enlisted in Co. C, 11th Regiment of the Illinois Infantry on April 20, 1861 and was mustered out July 29, 1861 because of ill health.
His wife, Sarah died February 5, 1877 and he married Emma A. McPherson and they had one daughter, Mamie, and she had a son by her previous marriage, Samuel McPherson. Emma died after about 11 years of marriage and William C. Baty was again married to a Jennie McCall.
He did some mining during his life. His later years were spent around Pueblo, Colorado."
