Mrs. Amos was born March 8, 1922 in Burke County, NC, the daughter of the late Lawson Gurley and Ardie Dale Houk, she was preceded in death by her husband Walter Amos; sons, Walter Kenneth Amos, 1939-1961, buried at Silver Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Morganton, NC; and Marion Edgar Amos; three brothers: George W. Houk, Joe A. Houk, and John Henry Houk; two sisters: Ruth Biggerstaff and Faye Duckworth. Mrs. Amos was a homemaker and a Baptist.
Survivors include one son, Joe W. Amos, Wrens; two daughters: Dianne (W. T.) Fields, Lexington, GA and Songia (Edward) Shevlin, Hop Bottom, PA; sister, Hazel White, Morganton, NC; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be W. T. Fields, Jr., Ronnie Anderson, Michael Fields, Wally Amos, and Joe “Buddy” Carrouth.

Songia (Sam) Shevlin, age 63, of Hop Bottom, and formerly of South Scranton, died Saturday evening at Regional Hospital of Scranton. She is survived by her husband of 32 years, Edward Shevlin. Born in Morganton, North Carolina, on January 9, 1950, daughter of the late Walter and Grace Hauck Amos, Songia had previously owned and operated the Scranton Business and Postal Center in South Scranton for ten years. An avid gardener, she was a member of the Penn State University Master Gardener Program of Susquehanna County. She is also survived by her three sons, Ronald, David and Wayne Anderson; her three step-daughters, Katherine Walker, Christine Sturtze and Karen Moore; her sister, Diane Fields; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Three brothers also preceded her in death. Blessing services are scheduled for Thursday at 10:00AM in the Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 125 N. Main Avenue, Scranton, with interment to follow at the Cathedral Cemetery. Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Wednesday between 5-7:00PM at the funeral home.
