Joel Samuel Butner was the fifth of six known children of Thomas Butner III (1804-1838) and Maria Elisabeth Fockel Butner (1808-1895), who married 04 Oct 1827 at Stokes (now Forsyth) County, North Carolina. Joel's father Thomas died when Joel was only four years old. In 1850 Joel and his elder brother Elias were living with the Joseph Knouse family at Forsyth County, North Carolina and both listed as apprentice wheel rights. By 1860 Joel had moved to Missouri and was living with a family at Cass County, Missouri and listed as a carpenter.

Joel married Sarah Elizabeth Hooper (1837-1912) on 11 Apr 1861 at Cass County, Missouri. Soon after marrying the family moved to Arkansas, as the eldest child, Thomas, was born in Arkansas in 1863. From 1870 to 1900 the family was enumerated as living at Mars Hill Township, Washington County, Arkansas. In 1900 Joel was enumerated as Jack Butner.

In 1910 the parents and two of their daughters were living at Lincoln Township, Seminole County, Oklahoma, near by to two of their sons. In 1920 the widower Joel and single daughter Mattie were still living at Lincoln Township, Seminole County, Oklahoma. Nearby were living his sons Thomas and James with their families.

Joel and Sarah were the parents of seven known children, namely:

1. Thomas Edley Butner (1863-1947)
2. George Isaac Butner (1866-1940)
3. Dora Harriet L. Butner Tucker Stephens (1869-1954)
4. James Albert Butner (1870-1948)
5. Laura Lucinda Butner Cohea (1872-1963)
6. Mary Agnes Butner Sheppard (1879-1956)
7. Mattie Butner Jensen (1882-1936)

It is not known where Mattie is buried. in 1900 the mother Sarah said she was the mother of seven, six living.
