Thomas Butner III was the third of six known children of Thomas Butner (1773-1833) and Johanna Elisabeth Stoehr Butner (1775-1813), who married 14 Nov 1799 at North Carolina.

Thomas married Maria (went by Mary) Elizabeth Fockel Butner (1808-1895) on 04 Oct 1827 at Stokes (now Forsyth) County, North Carolina. Thomas and Mary were the parents of six known children, namely:

1. Antoinette Lucinda Butner Jordan (1828-1902)
2. Elias Josiah Butner (1830-1862)
3. Jacob Edwin Butner (1831-1836)
4. Isaac Butner (1832-1833)
5. Joel Samuel Butner (1834-1924)
6. Nancy Elizabeth Butner (1837-1837)
