Elias Josiah Butner was the second of six known children of Thomas Butner III (1804-1838) and Maria Elisabeth Fockel (1808-1895), who married 04 Oct 1827 at Stokes (now Forsyth) County, North Carolina.

Elias married Susanna Adelaide Stoltz (1833-1872) on 10 Oct 1853 at Bethabara, Forsyth County, North Carolina. Elias was a farmer, who spent his life in the area around the Moravian community of Bethabara, Forsyth County, North Carolina.

Find-A-Grave contributor Charlie Mickey supplied the follow: "Capt. Elias Josiah Butner died 12/12/1862 while commanding Company D of the 57th North Carolina Regiment at the Battle of Fredericksburg."

Elias and Susanna were the parents of four known children, three girls and one boy. Three of the children lived to maturity. The four children were namely:

1. Harriet Lucinda Butner (1855-1861)
2. Antoinette Felicia Butner Fogle (1856-1900)
2. Thaddeus Marion Butner (1860-1937)
3. Mary Elias Butner Starbuck (1863-1951)
