Ernest received his early education in the schools of Kansas City, Missouri, He completed a thorough cource of study in the mineralogical department of the State University of Kansas and took a special couse of study at the Colorao School Of Mines

Ernest worked for a period of time in the Offices of the Union Pacific Railroad Company, in order to thoroughly inform himself in regard to the details of railroading.

From 1884 to 1890 Ernest was in Las Vegas, New Mexico as a member of the Browne and Manzanzaes Company. In 1890. he went to Socorro, New Mexico, where he was in charge of the cash department of the Browne and Manzanares Branch. In 1894, he became the manager of the branch
