Eleanor's life started in Austin, Texas, daughter of Annie Anderson and Thad Austin Thomson. He and his brothers had moved to the Austin area in 1880 to create a ranch that extended far and wide on the Edwards plateau and devoted itself to sheep and cattle. Eleanor spent much time on the ranch and forever remained a "ranch girl" at heart. As a young woman she was chosen "color girl" TWICE at the Naval Academy to lead the marching cadets. In 1910 she was chosen "Dutchess" from Austin at the San Antonio Fiesta. She and Palmer were married June 8, 1912. She became heavily involved in Houston's philanthropic activities as well as joined many clubs to include the Junior League. Because she loved flowers a highlight of her social activities included her presidency of the Houston Garden Club. Sadly she was taken from life after being diagnosed with Lupus and Addison's disease. Her three sons and grandchildren were there to give her comfort at the end.
