Butte County lost a Swedish-American gentleman with the passing of Eldon Albert Lundberg on June 26, 2010.

On June 20, 1928, Eldon was born at the home of his parents, Albert and Frances Lundberg in Phelps County, Nebraska. This was part of the farm homesteaded by his grandfather, Andrew Lundberg who emigrated from Sweden in the 19th Century.

Eldon began his schooling in 1934 at Riverview School #2 near Overton, Nebraska. He rode his pony, Benny, to school each day.

Due to the ravages of the Dust Bowl and the preceding Great Depression, the family decided to leave Nebraska in 1937. They joined many relatives and friends who had already settled in Richvale, California to begin farming land purchased by Frances's father in 1906.

In Richvale, Eldon continued his education at Richvale Elementary School. He studied, played, worked and worshipped alongside many cousins and friends from this time until the day he died.

He attended Biggs Union High School, graduating in 1946 as Salutatorian.

It was during the summer of 1946 that he began attending the Mount Hermon Christian Camps in the Santa Cruz Mountains. This was to become an influential part of his life and in the lives of his children and grandchildren. Many lasting traditions and wonderful memories include the yearly summer visits - not the least of which was a deep faith in the Lord.

After high school, Eldon attended Chico State College for two years.

He began farming rice with his father in the spring of 1948, but this was interrupted by a draft notice. He joined the U.S. Army in February of 1951 and was subsequently recruited into the Central Intelligence Corps. He served on the island of Ishigaki, in the chain of the Ryuku Islands, where he rose to the level of Corporal. Curiosity and investigation allowed him an early discharge in 1952 and a ride home on an airline, not a troop ship, to begin a lifetime of rice farming.

During his time in the military, he took several trips to Nebraska to visit his aunt and uncle who happened to attend a small country church, the Keene Evangelical Free Church. It was here that he met his wife, Ruth Marilyn Wendell. They were married in this church on December 4, 1953 in the midst of a blizzard.

After honeymooning in New Orleans, they returned home to Richvale. Here they began building the home they lived in for the rest of their lives.

It was in this home they raised their three children, Jennifer, Grant and Julianne. Eldon farmed with his father and his three brothers as they finished their schooling. Together they formed a unique and lasting partnership that resulted in the development of Lundberg Family Farms. Their working relationship has inspired their children and grandchildren to strive for the respect and wisdom they have shown to one another as a business model.

Eldon LOVED to fly the family's airplane and only decided to give up his license in March of this year, after logging 5,500 hours as pilot of the Cessna 182. He flew almost every day the weather would allow, using airports small and large, including Denver Stapleton, Chicago Midway, airports in Mexico and Canada, and Richvale International Airport! Bicycles also fascinated him and he had a large collection for his grandchildren to enjoy.

Eldon was a longtime member and deeply involved in the life of the Richvale Evangelical Free Church. More than a church member and leader, he loved and pursued the Lord throughout his life. He memorized many passages from the Bible and loved to quote from it. He was a quiet, consistent example of the love of God in the lives of his family, friends, and business associates.

He was involved in the Oroville Exchange Club, the California and International Flying Farmers, and the 13 Aces Coffee Club. He served on the Board of Directors of the Butte County Rice Growers Association. He was a member of the US Rice Council. He also served on the Butte County Probation Board.

Eldon loved making and listening to music his entire life. He always promoted musical study and performance within his family. One of his favorite projects with Ruth later in life was to sponsor the refurbishing of the historic pipe organ at the church in Richvale and founding the concert series called Melodies At Noon. The series is a county favorite and will continue with his brothers' help.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ruth; daughters and sons-in-law, Jennifer and Kevin Parrish, Julianne and Blake Stafford; son and daughter-in-law, Grant and Susie Lundberg; his grandchildren, Emma, Madeline, Grace, Ansel, Georgia, Mae, and Nelson, and his three brothers and their wives and families, Wendell and Carolyn, Harlan and Carolyn, and Homer and Carol Lundberg.

We will miss his smiling face, love, humor, graciousness, and wisdom until we see him again in the presence of Christ.

A viewing will be held at Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home on Thursday, July 1, 2010 from 5-7 p.m. A service will be at the Richvale Evangelical Free Church on Friday, July 2, 2010 at 11:30 a.m.
