Ira was born in Ohio. His father has not been located but his mother was Minerva who was born in New York. Minerva and her children are enumerated in the 1850 U.S. Census for Porter Township, Porter County, Indiana. The family removed to Alton, Buchanan County, Iowa where they can be found in the 1856 Iowa Census.

Although Ira has not been found in the 1860 U.S. Census, he came back to Indiana by 1861 where he served in the Civil War. He enlisted on June 14, 1861 as a Private in Company C, 15th Infantry Regiment, Indiana, and transferred to Company K, 17th Infantry Regiment, Indiana, on May 31, 1864. He mustered out on August 8, 1865 in Macon, Georgia.

He married Mary White on March 27, 1864 in Porter County, Indiana. Children from the union were: Elmer, Melvin and Bertha.

The family went back to Buchanan County, Iowa by 1870, but returned to Porter County, Indiana by 1880.

A bill was introduced in the U.S. Congress by Congressman Edgar Crumpacker to grant Ira an invalid pension in 1897. It was moved to committee. The result of the bill has not been located. Given that his children did not live with him and his wife in the 1880 census, one might conclude there were serious health issues probably due to his service in the Civil War, but this has not been verified.
