ANOTHER VETERAN CALLED BY DEATH
(From Thursday's Daily) -- Hiram W. Miller, age 77, a veteran of the civil war and one of the best known and best loved citizens of Valparaiso, died this morning at his house on Institute street after a long, severe illness. For many days Mr. Miller had been sinking, and his death was expected at any time. Mrs. Miller and four children, Charles Miller, Raleigh Miller, Ira Miller, and Mrs. August Eckholm, are left to mourn his loss.
Mr. Miller was born in Knox county, Ohio, and came to Porter county when he was a small boy. Later he lived in Iowa, but when the war broke out he enlisted, August 9, 1862, with the Seventy-third Indiana volunteers and served through through the war to his honorable discharge, July 1, 1865. He fought in the battle of Stone river and various other severe conflicts, and the regiment attained high honor for the valor of its men.
Farming had been the pursuit of Mr. Miller during much of his life but from this he finally retired. He will be remembered by hundreds who attended the Christian church, for which he did long service as custodian of the building and premises. He was congenial, kind, and friendly to all, and very few people reside in the city who had not the pleasure of his acquaintance.
Mr. Miller was a brother of Emery Miller, of Jessup, Ia.; Sylvester and Levi, of Independence, Ia.; Mrs. J. T. Cameron, of Vinton, Ia.; Mrs. Jane Abbott, of Hillsboro, Ore., and Mrs. Phoebe Brant, of Port Orchard, Wash.
