Jonathan is the son of Samuel Doty and Jane Harman. According to New Jersey records, Jonathan married a 'Mary' but her maiden name was not known.

In 1717 in Piscataway, Middlesex county, records show "the marks of Samuel Doty [Jonathan's father] are now the marks of his "ondley" [only?] son Jonathan Doty, the mark being the same that was entered, 1686, or earlier as the mark of Samuel "Dotie". Note: Jonathan is not Samuel's only son so the meaning of "ondley" is unknown.

On the 16 Aug 1730 Jonathan appears in the Lord Stirling papers, showing that he was granted a lease of 150 acres in Somerset County at Basking Ridge, east side of Dead River - to plant 150 apple trees and put up a building. His last name written as Doughty, but he signed the paper as Doty.

Some people believe Jonathan married a Mary Duane because there is a marriage record for "JOHN" Doty and Mary Duane in the same location as Jonathan and his Mary. Proof, however, does not exist that the John who married Mary Duane is Jonathan or that Jonathan went by the name of John.
