The oldest of seven children born to W.O. Key and Eula Elmira (White) Key. Claude "Buck" was born in Indian Territory, before Oklahoma became a state. He was a saddle bronc rider, calf roper and knife thrower for his half-brother, Joe Key. Joe owned the Key Bros. Wild West Show from 1916 to 1929.

He married Birdie (Meggs) McDougal and to them were born two known sons, James Key and John Claude Key. After his wife died, he married Christine McDonald.
Buck has two tombstones erected. One is in Ft. Towson Cemetery...but he is not there. Christine wanted him to be buried closer to home, so she had him buried at Swink in the Swink Cemetery.
