Alfred I. Alf, 84, 1110 2d Ave. S, died in a local nursing home early Friday.
He was born May 30, 1900 at Canton, China of missionary parents. When he was 17, the family moved back to the United States. He was graduated from the East Des Moines High School in 1918. He was graduated from The College of Wooster, Ohio, in 1923, and from the University of North Dakota School of Mines in 1926.
After graduation he came to Great Falls and to work for the Anaconda Co. as a chemist in the general laboratory. In 1928, he was transferred to the research department and in 1934 he went into the supervisory capacity of various departments at the zinc plant. He was a zinc plant metal worker for the Anaconda Co. with more than 39 years service when he retired Oct. 1, 1965.
He married Doris Blakely in Missoula in 1951.
He was a member of the Cascade Masonic Lodge 34 AF&AM, the Elks Lodge, the American Institute of Mining, Metalurgical and Petroleum Engineers and the Downtown Lions Club. He was a registered professional engineer. He had been an elder and trustee of the First Presbyterian Church and sang in the church choir, the Apollo Male Chorus and Elks Choraleers.
Survivors include his wife; sons, Edward, Orange, Calif., and John W., Hurst, Texas; a daughter, Karen; stepson, Lloyd Smith, Bakersfield, Calif.; stepdaughter, Carol Huot, Cloverdale, Calif.; sisters, Winifred Andrew (Des Moines, WA); and Mildred Corlett of Portland; a brother Raymond Alf, Claremont, Calif.; several grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services will be announced by the O'Connor Funeral Home. Cremation has taken place.
