A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 24, 1999, in Rose City Park Presbyterian Church for Mildred Evangeline Corlett, who died Sept. 26 at age 95.

Mrs. Corlett was born Sept. 8, 1904, in Guangzhou, China, where her parents were missionaries. Her maiden name was Alf. She was raised in China and after moving to the United States completed nurse's training in St. Paul, Minn. She was head nurse from 1926 to 1929 in the birth rooms of the Chicago Lying-in Hospital, then returned to Guangzhou to teach nursing at Presbyterian Mission Hospital.

She moved to Portland in 1937 and was a homemaker until returning to nursing in 1948 in obstetrics in Portland hospitals. She contributed to a research project studying the causes of cerebral palsy and mental retardation at the University of Oregon Medical School (now OHSU) from 1957 to 1961, when she received a bachelor's degree from the university's school of nursing. She then was an obstetrics instructor at Emanuel Hospital School of Nursing until retiring in 1975.

During her retirement she volunteered as a school nurse at Grant High, with the American Red Cross and -- until she was 90 -- with the Association of Volunteer Registered Nurses. She had been a member of the church since 1938.

In 1936, she married Donald A. Corlett; he died in 1981.

Survivors include her son, Donald A. Jr. of Concord, Calif.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Her son Thomas A. died in 1968, and her daughter Elizabeth A. died in 1986.

Interment was in Portland Memorial Mausoleum. The family suggests remembrances to her church, Baptist Manor or Kaiser Hospice. Arrangements were by Portland Memorial Funeral Home.
