Paul was born in Colfax, Iowa.
After graduation, and the advent of World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy.
Like his two younger brothers, he served in the Pacific Theater. He served as a corpsman on a destroyer, and attended to many wounded and dying men when it was hit by enemy aircraft. Soon after the war, he met and married his wife and loving companion of 59 years, the former Mary Edith ("Edie") Rafferty. They made their home in San Diego together for the ensuing 55 years.
Following retirement from the military in 1966, he began a second career with the San Diego City School District, transporting special needs children. In retirement, he was an active member of Elk's Lodge #1812. Remembered for never
missing a daily visit to the nursing home where his cherished wife resided for her last five years, and frequently playing the organ to entertain the home's
residents.
. He is predeceased by his adored and
adoring wife Edie, his brothers Dale and Donald, and by his sons Roger and Ronald.
Paul was a committed husband, father, grandfather and friend. He also was an avid fisherman who built his own seaworthy boat from scratch, a crossword enthusiast, and an ardent Padres and Chargers fan. His good humor and engaging
personality always will be a treasured memory.
A memorial service is scheduled for Friday, October 12th at 1:00 p.m. at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in Point Loma; off-site reception to follow.
