Memorial services for Donald Myron Binkerd, founder of Palm Springs Mortuary and former superintendent of the Palm Springs Cemetery District, will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow at the Ramon Chapel at Palm Springs Mortuary in Cathedral City. He died Friday at the Jerry L. Pettis Memorial Veterans Hospital in Loma Linda. He was 69.
Friends may call today from 5 until 8 p.m. at Palm Springs Mortuary in Palm Springs.
Interment will be in Desert Memorial Park in Cathedral City.
Mr. Binkerd, who was born in Colfax, Iowa, lived in Cathedral City for 40 years. He graduated from the California College of Mortuary Science in 1951.
He served in the U. S. Navy as a pharmacist mate, second class, from 1943 to 1946.
Mr. Binkerd was a mortician and a funeral director. He founded Palm Springs Mortuary and owned the business for 17 years. He also served as superintendent of the Palm Springs Cemetery District from 1978 to 1986.
He served on the House Committee of Elks Lodge No. 1905 and was a former commander of the American Legion, Palm Springs Post No. 519. Mr. Binkerd was past master of Masonic Lodge No. 693 in Palm Springs and served on the committee of the Grand Masonic Lodges of California.
In addition, he was a former elder of Palm Springs Community Church and was a member of Al Malikah Shrine.
Mr. Binkerd is survived by his wife, Elaine; four sons, Jerry of Palm Desert, Michael of Rancho Mirage, James of Aptos and Mark of San Diego; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a sister, Jean Aiken of Iowa, and a brother, Paul of San Diego.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the Masonic Home, 1650 Old Badillo St., Covina, Calif. 91724 or to the California-Hawaii Elks Major Project for Handicapped Children, P. O. Box 4070, Palm Springs, 92263.
