Memorial services for retired Navy Lt. Cmdr. Dale A. Binkerd, 66, of El Cajon were Sunday in the El Cajon Elks Lodge. Cremation was planned by the Neptune Society, with ashes to be scattered at sea. He died Jan. 10 in his home.

Cmdr. Binkerd, a native of Colfax, Iowa, was a resident of the county for four years. He served in the Navy 30 years (13 Nov 1941 - 31 Jan 1972), was a veteran of World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War, and was awarded the Bronze Star. He served aboard submarines and ships that include the USS Albacore (SS-218), USS Nautilus (SS-168), USS Isherwood (DD-520), USS Corporal (SS-346), USS Indian Island (AG-77) and USS IREX (SS-482).

Survivors include his wife, Lucy; a son, Andy of Laguna Niguel, Calif.; a daughter, Ellen Swain of Los Angeles; his mother, Hazel, and a sister, Jean Akins, both of Baxter, Iowa; two brothers, Paul of San Diego and Donald of Cathedral City, Calif.; and five grandchildren. The family suggested donations to the El Cajon Elks' building fund.
