Esther was the fourth of ten children born to Henry David and Hannah Jane (Yockey) Burkepile, on their farm in Perry County, Pennsylvania, probably in Saville township.

She was raised in the Lutheran faith, and confirmed at the Mannsville Lutheran Church on November 9, 1861, per the book "Churches Between the Mountains".

In September 1867, in Pennsylvania, she married John Andrew Fortney. He was the son of William Henry and Lucinda (Burkholder) Fortney.

They farmed near the Fortney homeplace in Franklin County, Pennsylvania for many years, and she bore five children there, of which Agnes Barbara, Susan Alice, and Ella Catherine grew to adulthood. They had a son, John, who was three years old when the 1880 census was taken, but must have died as a child. The 1910 census indicates that at that point she had lost two children; nothing is known about that other child.

After 1880, they moved their family to Wayne County, Ohio where John farmed. Their last child, Maude, was born in 1885. In their later years, they lived in or near Cleveland, where the 1910 census showed that John was a fireman in an office building.

John died on January 9, 1916 at their home in Wayne County, so obviously they had moved back. John's death certificate reveals that the doctor thought that he had died due to "mitral insufficiency" and opined that his occupation had been too great a burden for the condition of his heart.

Esther continued to live in Wayne County, and daughter Sue took care of her. She suffered a stroke with accompanying paralysis and died at home in Brunswick township, Wayne County at 5:00 p.m. on December 14, 1927; burial followed three days later in the Wooster Cemetery.
