Born in Bozeman, Herva lived her early years in Eustis, MT, where her father worked for the Milwaukee RR. She graduated from Three Forks High School (1940), Montana State College (now MSU), and the Deaconess school of nursing.
She was working as an instructor in a Great Falls hospital when she met Jim at a church meeting. He was asking if anybody needed a ride home, specifically targeting another gal, but Herva piped up and the "rest is history."
Jim and Herva were married in Great Falls in the First United Methodist Church, Aug 31, 1946. Frank Andersen was best man. Herva's sister, Mary Gail, was bridesmaid. Frank and Mary Gail would marry the next year. Jim's aunt Bessie sang and was accompanied by his sister, Mary Jane. After a reception at the Park Hotel, and a honeymoon in MT, they moved to Bozeman. Herva worked as a health nurse in the county offices and Jim went to school at MSC.
After Jim graduated, the family moved to Philipsburg, MT, where Jim taught math and science at Granite HS and Herva continued her work as a nurse. After a brief stay in Whitehall in the second half of 1953, they moved to Bozeman for good.
Herva spent the rest of her career working for the Bozeman Deaconess Hospital and MSU's School of Nursing. She earned one of the first Master's degrees in nursing from MSC. She served as Assistant Director of Nursing; Director of In-Service Education, being responsible for the clinical portion of MSU nursing courses; and Director of Quality Control. She was President of Montana Nurses Association from 1968-1970 and District 3 treasurer for several years.
She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Pilgrim Congregational United Church of Christ, and an active volunteer for many fundraisers and health services in Bozeman. She was a woman who did it all - family, career, volunteer work, hunting, fishing, piano, and, of course, harmonica.
Jim died in 1987, and Herva continued her active life for many years until moving to Colorado Springs in 2005. She was survived by her 3 children, both of her brothers, both of her sisters (Mary Gail died in 2012, Bink died in 2014), seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held in Oct 2011 at the Pilgrim Congregation Church in Bozeman. It was many memories shared and a musical affair that she would have loved.
