Emanuel was the second oldest child of George Washington and Catharine Overholt Humerickhouse. Born in Tuscarawas County, Ohio, he moved with his parents to Greene County, Indiana, about 1863. He eventually owned property south of Odon which he farmed until he retired to live in town. He married his first wife Sarah and they remained joined for 61 years until her death. The couple had 10 children. He later married Melissa Jane Roberts 1936 and Addie Wininger (1868-?) in 1937 just 29 days after Jenny died.
