Mary Jane Culbert was born in Ashfield Township, the daughter of Thomas Culbert and Jane Martin both of Ireland who emigrated to Ontario, Canada about 1848. She was the youngest of 10 children. On the 10 March 1885, she married Shadrach Rivett Jr in Ashfield. They had 9 children:
